SHAKSPER 1992: Another SHREW Variation
From: Hardy M. Cook (hmcook@boe00.minc.umd.edu) Date: 11/16/92
Shakespeare Electronic Conference, Vol. 3, No. 320. Monday, 16 November 1992. From: Jon Enriquez <ENRIQUEZJ@GUVAX.BITNET> Date: Monday, 16 Nov 1992 17:56 EST Subject: Another Shrew Variation Bryan, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this, but if you're going to consider as sharp a variation on "Shrew" as the Moonlighting version, you should also look at "Kiss Me, Kate". While the Kate/Petruchio relationship itself isn't too different -- Kate/Lilli Vanessi is still shrewish, but in ways Petruchio/Fred Graham doesn't always expect -- it's interesting to compare & contrast it to that of Lilli and Fred. I've also seen "Kate" played so that when Kate sings "I Am Ashamed that Women Are So Simple" at the end, she is in fact making a fool of Petruchio. That's a performance variation, rather than a textual one, and it might be outside your purview. For whatever it's worth, there it is. Jon Enriquez
