The current Richard III in Stratford and going soon on tour is Simon RUSSELL
BEALE well known from a few seasons ago for a playing foppish characters, for a
fine Thersites, and what I thought a very good, if horrifically dispatched,
King in *Edward II*.  Beale's Richard is rather sweaty, black humour in the
first half, but rises to something very good in the latter part with splendid
late scenes. *Richard III* is a stunning play, filled with riches. This time I
was impressed with Shakespeare's use of religion.
 
The McKellan version which I saw early on was a depressing spectacle.  I have
been informed by someone who returned later that it has not improved.  I
believe it has been on tour in the Western USA as well?
 
The cycles of Shakespearian histories done a few years ago by the English
Shakespeare Company (particularly) but also by the RSC should not be omitted
from discussions of *Richard III*.  In them it forms the culminating piece. It
is always slightly problematic when not done with the *Henry 6th* plays?
