It met with mixed reviews here in DC. If you want a more specific review, I could find some for you. Todd M. The RSC cur- rently has another production at Stratford with Simon (can't remember his last name) playing Richard. It was reviewed in the Sunday NYT within the last couple of weeks. Ian McKellan played Richard in another stuning pro- duction that I think originated in the National Theatre in London but also came to New York for a while last summer. Doubtless the main North American Shakespeare festivals have staged *Richard III* as well, within the last few years. Others will know about that better than I. Cheers. John D. Jean Brink, ASU (4)-------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Hardy M. Cook <HMCook@boe00.minc.umd.edu> Date: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1992 Subject: RE: *Richard III* For the past two years, I have compiled the list of Shakespeare Summer Festivals for *The Shakespeare Newsletter*. A review of my files reveals that *Richard III* was staged in 1991 at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Georgia Shakespeare Festival, and the Oak Park Shakespeare Festival, while in 1992 R3 was preformed at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. The Shakespeare Summer Festivals list has been a feature of *The Shakespeare Newsletter* since its inception forty years ago. The lists appear in the Spring and Summer issues. During the past fifteen years, I have seen three productions in the Washington, D.C. area. In 1978 Paul Collins played Richard at the Folger Theatre (reviewed SQ, 30: 196), in 1990 with Stacy Keach at the Folger (SQ, 42: 473-476), and this past summer with Ian McKellen at the Kennedy Center. While the R3 with McKellen was stunning, I preferred Keach's romp through the play. Hardy M. Cook Bowie State University
