  I've noticed how the enrichment of detail can distort what
seems a simple enough picture.  The above inscription says to
me that Mr W. H. is the subject of and most likely the printer's
source for the poems.  I think it likely W. H. is lost to
history, yet just as the major landmarks of an island
disappearing in our wake may be our most vivid memory, so the
nobles are all we have to posit as pretenders for Mr W. H.
Was it perhaps the wastrel Southampton with his initials
transposed, or that notable's step-father, who allows of a
more conventional arrangement of letters?
 
I believe parsimony requires more evidence than I have seen
to convince that the person to whom Mr Thorpe shows such
gratitude for the Sonnets was not also their object.
