From: Tim Bowden <tcbowden@clovis.felton.ca.us> Date: Monday, May 25, 1992, 17:58:37 -0400 Subject: Ashland and the Serious Tourist From: Barry Rountree <WCONDEE@OUACCVMB.BITNET> Date: Tuesday, May 26, 1992, 15:21:38 EST Subject: Stradford Festival (1)----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tim Bowden <tcbowden@clovis.felton.ca.us> Date: Monday, May 25, 1992, 17:58:37 -0400 Subject: Ashland and the Serious Tourist > I'll be going to the Oregon Shakespearean Festival this summer. > Does anyone have any recommendations for the productions being > offered this year? It will be my first time attending, so any > tips will be welcome. I love Ashland and am sorry I have not returned more often. I have no suggestions about the offerings this year, but as for tips... We ordered tickets through the mails for the outdoor Elizabethan Theatre. That was because we wanted the security of at least that performance. When we arrived, we might show up outside before every curtain. We didn't, in most cases, even have to wear funny signs to find tickets; there are always parties fewer when they arrive than when they planned the trip. If you don't score tickets, Ashland is an easy place to be waiting for the next curtain. I remember parks within easy walking distance, faux-Elizabethan pubs, and a health food sandwich shop. Be prepared that everyone in your audience is not as intent on the performance as you must be. Acoustics in the nearby Agnus Browmer Theatre are wonderful, but that means lines can be and are blotted out by the lady behind you explaining the plot to her sluggish husband. When the tour bus arrives, you will be watching mime; we once in that same theatre had a passel of high schoolers whose training was Prime Time and who could not for the life of them understand why everybody was glaring at them. There used to be command performances on Saturday nights at the Swan across the street, and there is now a conventional theatre downtown. One year, on a Saturday morning, I had the rare pleasure of attending a rummage sale with the electric actress who one night previous was Ophelia now offering second-hand blouses to anybody who happened by. Maybe it has all changed by now. For your sake, I hope not too much. I wish I were going with you. (2)--------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barry Rountree <WCONDEE@OUACCVMB.BITNET> Date: Tuesday, May 26, 1992, 15:21:38 EST Subject: Stradford Festival Is there a performance schedule for the Stradford Festival in Canada for this year? Can one purchase tickets yet? Quite a while ago, an surface address was posted where one could send off for a brochure, and no answer has been forthcoming. Do you have an address handy? Should I call the local chamber of commerce to get all of this information and then post it to SHAKSPER?
