SHAKSPER 1992: R: PD Hamlet Videos

Shakespeare Electronic Conference, Vol. 3, No. 27. Sunday, 2 Feb 1992. Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1992 21:03:24 -0500 From: Steve Urkowitz <surcc@cunyvm.bitnet> Subject: 3.0024 N&Q: PD Hamlet Videos? Comment: Re: SHK 3.0024 N&Q: PD Hamlet Videos? The availability of "public domain" videos of Shakespearean productions remains a mystery. But a partial listing of non-professional productions does appear in the annual World Shakespeare Bibliography, a fine service. I wonder if the editors of the bibliography might indicate or ask the various production venues to indicate the availability of "archival" videos, or even promptbooks, or production photos or design sketches. One auxiliary task (for those who have the energy for it) might be to propose some sort of "protocols" for taping a production or simply for describing whatever documents remain after the ephemeral delights of the last night's applause. Ah well. Just last night I was phoning for a copy of a tape that was made of THE PLAY OF LAZARUS from the Fleury playbook, a production that I directed twenty years ago in Greenwich Village. The owner of the tape told me that the physical object exists, but the playback equipment that would display it has been defunct for a long while. I'll just tell my performance class about it and leave much to their imaginations. Good luck on your searches. Steve Urkowitz
