SHAKSPER 1991: Audience Reaction in Shakespeare's Theatre
From: Ken Steele (ksteele@epas.utoronto.ca) Date: 12/03/91
Shakespeare Electronic Conference, Vol. 2, No. 317. Tuesday, 3 Dec 1991. Date: Tue, 3 Dec 1991 15:57:00 -0500 From: Balz Engler <engler@urz.unibas.ch> Subject: [Audience Reaction in Shakespeare's Theatre] I am interested in audience reaction, especially applause in the theatre of Shakespeare's time. I am aware, of course, of passages like the ending of *The Tempest* or *The Knight of the Burning Pestle*. But what I cannot find is a systematic discussion of what audiences contributed to the performances. Susan Bennett's recent book on *Theatre Audiences* is not of much help, because it is systematic, not historical, and is based on reception aesthetics. Probably there is no treatment of the questions I am interested in. So I am interested in any snippet of information members of SHAKSPER know of.
