Subject: Death of G. B. Harrison

We've seen no mention of this earlier. In +The Times+ of 12
November there is an obituary of G. B. Harrison. He died in New
Zealand on 1 November, aged 97. Many of us, of a certain age,
cut our Shakespearean teeth on his +Shakespeare, Major Plays and
Sonnets+. The obituary says, in part, "He was above all a useful
scholar. It is true that some of his writing has been
superseded. But a completely fresh start has seldom needed to
be made: the ground-work was eminently sound. . . . Countless
students of Shakespeare in any case are in great debt to his
prolific efforts on their behalf for Penguin, which made cheap
editions of the individual plays available to all."
