SHAKSPER 1991: Query: Sumptuary Laws
From: Ken Steele (ksteele@epas.utoronto.ca) Date: 04/18/91
Shakespeare Electronic Conference, Vol. 2, No. 105. Thursday, 18 Apr 1991. [The following query, which appeared yesterday on FICINO, the Centre for Reformation & Renaissance Studies Bitnet discussion group (FICINO@utoronto.bitnet) seemed relevant enough to redistribute here on SHAKSPER. My apologies to SHAKSPEReans who belong to both groups, and hence will be receiving this note a second time. KS] Date: Tue, 16 Apr 91 20:58:20 MDT From: "Stephen R. Reimer" <SREIMER@vm.ucs.UAlberta.CA> Subject: Query A graduate student here is working on Shakespeare and the language of costume, and is seeking documentary evidence of the enforcement of the sumptuary laws with respect to clothing in England in the Tudor period (he has lots of information on the statutes themselves: what he is looking for is evidence that they were enforced). Can anyone help with references? He would also appreciate any help in contacting Professor R. Mark Benbow, who is working on the London Aldermen's Court and Bridewell Court minute books for 1565-1605: an e-mail or HM Post Office address would be welcome. Please reply directly to me. Thank-you. Stephen R. Reimer sreimer@vm.ucs.ualberta.ca English, University of Alberta sreimer@ualtavm.bitnet
